Ejercicios de Estilo es un proyecto en el que he querido profundizar en el uso de la literatura, en general, y del texto como imagen, en particular. Con un sistema de construcción similar a Still life / Style leaf en cuanto al uso de imágenes de páginas de un libro arrugadas, en este caso he decidido trabajar con “Exercices de Style” del escritor francés Raymond Queneau. En el libro Queneau relata una breve situación cotidiana que sucede en un autobús, y luego la re-escribe noventa y nueve veces, de noventa y nueve maneras distintas; cada vez en un estilo literario radicalmente diferente.
Inicialmente, ideé tres series: un primer grupo de obras reproduce las primeras seis páginas del libro y han sido realizadas en fieltro de lana natural calado a mano; la segunda serie, que corresponde a las siguientes once páginas, ha sido realizada en papel calado a mano; la tercera reproduce las siguientes ocho páginas mediante bordado a mano.
Pero luego, en una segunda exhibición en Aninat Galería quise incluir una cuarta serie. Recordando un ejercicio de iluminación de un cubo blanco de Sol Lewitt, me propuse refotografiar las páginas arrugadas del libro, esta vez, variando la iluminación en cada toma. El resultado de esta sesión fotográfica fue un total de casi trescientas imágenes, a partir de las cuales realicé collages fotográficos de las siguientes trece páginas del libro “Exercices de Style“.
La serie de reflexiones que surgieron en torno a este proyecto se recogieron en un libro doble –un libro de artista y otro que reunió un ensayo de Begoña Alberdi y un texto mío–. De este proyecto se imprimieron 99 libros dobles; doce de ellos, contenidos en un estuche, junto a una edición de un collage fotográfico de la página 45 de “Exercices de Style“, Ignorance. De una manera similar a como Queneau utiliza el lenguaje de diversos modos en sus historias, en mis ejercicios presento diferentes aproximaciones a las imágenes de las páginas de textos arrugados; cada variación material y técnica posibilita una nueva lectura, donde, en definitiva, la forma siempre es contenido.

Exercises in Style is a project in which I wanted to explore the use of literature in general, and text as image in particular. Using a construction system similar to Still Life / Style Leaf in terms of the use of images from crumpled pages of a book, in this case I decided to work with “Exercises in Style” by French writer Raymond Queneau. In the book, Queneau recounts a brief everyday situation that takes place on a bus, and then rewrites it ninety-nine times, in ninety-nine different ways, each time in a radically different literary style.
Initially, I came up with three series: the first group of works reproduces the first six pages of the book and has been made from hand-cut natural wool felt; the second series, corresponding to the next eleven pages, has been made from hand-cut paper; the third reproduces the following eight pages using hand embroidery.
But then, in a second exhibition at Aninat Galería, I wanted to include a fourth series. Remembering an exercise in lighting a white cube by Sol Lewitt, I decided to re-photograph the crumpled pages of the book, this time varying the lighting in each shot. The result of this photo session was a total of almost three hundred images, from which I made photographic collages of the following thirteen pages of the book “Exercices de Style”.
The series of reflections that arose around this project were collected in a double book—an artist’s book and another that brought together an essay by Begoña Alberdi and a text by me. Ninety-nine double books were printed from this project; twelve of them, contained in a case, together with an edition of a photographic collage of page 45 of “Exercices de Style”, Ignorance. In a similar way to how Queneau uses language in different ways in his stories, in my exercises I present different approaches to the images on the pages of crumpled texts; each material and technical variation enables a new reading, where, ultimately, form is always content.
