Mónica Bengoa expande una premisa ya tratada en obras anteriores, en las que utiliza la fotografía de frutas y verduras como referencia. Teniendo, en esta ocasión, como tema la batata dulce de Aljezur, Mónica retoma el proyecto One hundred and sixty three shades of yellow, green, orange, red, purple, brown, gray and blue (so far), que comenzó en 2005.
En colaboración con el chef João Oliveira de Algarve, esta artista chilena, apasionada por el estudio exhaustivo del color, produjo un registro fotográfico y dibujos de las diferentes variedades cromáticas existentes de batata como preparación para una obra de arte que, como motivo, se basa en las formas y texturas de esta planta, originaria de los Andes. Así nació una pieza que muestra imágenes fotográficas subrayadas por bocetos hechos a mano que actúan como ventanas a la realidad.
Mónica Bengoa considera la naturaleza muerta como modelo paradigmático de la pintura, y está fascinada con la botánica como un ejercicio de observación, desde la perspectiva de la práctica fotográfica. La investigación de los diferentes colores presentes en la batata se realiza a través de visitas durante la residencia de la artista, a los campos de cultivo de este tubérculo, que se cultiva alrededor de Aljezur y también Tavira. Además del contacto directo con el producto en sí, la artista fue capaz de familiarizarse, con la colaboración de la Associação de Produtores de Batata-doce de Aljezur [Asociación de Productores de Batata dulce de Aljezur], con las tradiciones de cultivo y las características del suelo donde se cultiva el producto estrella de la zona.

Mónica Bengoa expands on a premise already dealt with in previous works, in which she uses photography of fruit and vegetables as a reference. On this occasion, with the sweet potato from Aljezur as her subject, Mónica revisits the project One hundred and sixty three shades of yellow, green, orange, red, purple, brown, gray and blue (so far), which she began in 2005.
In collaboration with chef João Oliveira from Algarve, this Chilean artist, who is passionate about the exhaustive study of colour, produced a photographic record and drawings of the different existing chromatic varieties of sweet potato in preparation for a work of art that, as a motif, is based on the shapes and textures of this plant, native to the Andes. Thus was born a piece that shows photographic images underlined by hand-drawn sketches that act as windows into reality.
Monica Bengoa considers still life as a paradigmatic model for painting, and is fascinated by botany as an exercise in observation, from the perspective of photographic practice. The investigation of the different colours present in the sweet potato is carried out through visits during the artist’s residency, to the cultivation fields of this tuber, which is grown around Aljezur and also Tavira. In addition to direct contact with the product itself, the artist was able to familiarise herself, with the collaboration of the Associação de Produtores de Batata-doce de Aljezur [Association of Sweet Potato Producers of Aljezur], with the growing traditions and the characteristics of the soil where the star product of the area is grown.
