Juan en el Estrecho

2020

On the occasion of the commemoration of the 500 years of the Circumnavigation of Ferdinand Magellan, the “Incognitum” residency was held in November 2019 in the Magallanes Region, for 10 Chilean and 10 Portuguese artists, in a cultural exchange project between Chile and Portugal. The project included, among other events, an exhibition in July 2020 at the old Cordoaria in Lisbon, Portugal, which had to be canceled due to the pandemic.

For the creation of Juan I selected a fragment of text by the Italian chronicler Antonio Pigafetta —who accompanied Magellan on his journey— about one of the first encounters between the native Yaganes and the missionaries determined to “civilize” them. I hand-cut this text on a 130 x 397 cm  (51” x 156”) burel cloth, which my assistant Pablo Rojas also hand-festooned, and then installed it in the Parque del Estrecho de Magallanes in the remote south of Chile, thus giving rise to the series of photographs that make up the Juan en el Estrecho (Juan in the Strait) project.
