entre lo exhaustivo y lo inconcluso

19 marzo – 15 mayo 2009
Sala Gasco, Santiago, Chile

sinodendron cylindricum (ciervo volante)

between the exhaustive and the inconclusive

March 19th – May 15th, 2009
Sala Gasco, Santiago, Chile

Press release

This exhibition responds to the artist’s interest in showing, for the first time, the working methodology she uses in each of her murals.

Mónica Bengoa’s artistic research has established a working process around the problem of the material expansion of private space, using strategies of transferring photographic images to large murals, thus establishing bridges of material exchange with other media and supports, inverting formal strategies from drawing and painting, including the use of objects.

“between the exhaustive and the inconclusive” was born after her participation in the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007. “I was very interested in continuing to work with insect images. At that time I chose them, because it is a specific type of photography –macro photography–, and insects are probably one of the clearest examples of its use,” she explains.

Over the years, Mónica Bengoa has worked with different elements, techniques or photographic concepts, and in this case it seemed appropriate to use the “enlargement” of the image of an insect, whose reference point is tiny. The idea of having insects 4.5 meters high seemed interesting to her. On the other hand,” she adds, “all my work involves different classificatory processes, and taxonomy in the case of insects seemed fascinating to me. This project has to do with showing part of my work methodology”.

“The reasons for exhibiting in Sala Gasco are various and are due to both contextual and spatial considerations. In spatial terms it seems to me that the large showcases are an invitation to passers-by who pass daily through a part of the city that doesn’t belong to a circuit directly linked to the visual arts, least of all contemporary art. In that sense, I’ve always been interested in my work being seen by as diverse a public as possible, precisely because my works are often installed as a practice that fluctuates between contemporary visual arts and procedures linked to rather artisanal techniques”.

“It’s basically a drawing exhibition. For the first time I’m going to show what’s underneath, the drawing that serves as the basis for all my mural works. I’m going to show the maps for the construction of murals; that’s why they have numbers on them, which are the colour codes, be it aniline, pencils or others”.

“‘between the exhaustive and the inconclusive’” is part of a phrase written by George Perec in his book Sort of Thoughts, and it has to do precisely with the impossibility of classifying everything. However much one constructs a rigorous methodological system, there are things that escape all rules, and this contradiction is tremendously interesting from the point of view of the research of the work.
