Oito variações sobre o mesmo

2015

Dibujo y fotografía impresa en papel Hahnemühle
29,7 x 42 cm c/u

Oito variações sobre o mesmo / Eight variation on the same subject

2015

Drawing and photography, printed on Hahnemühle paper.

29,7 x 42 cm (11,7” x 16,5”) each

This set of small works was made in a brief residency in the south of Portugal, to which I was invited by curator André de Quiroga and the Aspas e Parênteses Association, to participate in Mar e Montanha, a project that brought together contemporary art and signature cuisine. Twenty artists and twenty chefs; each pair with the task of working with a product from the Algarve area.

In my case, the assignment included becoming familiar with the batata-doce –that is, the sweet potato–, which I was able to get to know up close by visiting different crops in the areas of Aljezur and Tavira. The variety of shapes and colors reminded me of a previous project, also carried out during a residency, ten years earlier. I am referring to One hundred and sixty three shades of yellow, green, orange, red, purple, brown, gray and blue (so far), a work in which I brought together the hand embroidery of fruits and vegetables, with the drawing on the wall. This is how Eight variations on the same subject was born, an observation exercise that began with the photographic record of the different varieties of sweet potato that I was able to see. A simple project –efficient for my brief time spent in Portugal– but thanks to that temporal concentration it allowed me to pay attention to that “insignificant” tubercle, to its chromatic details, to its shapes and textures, and above all, to draw again.
