Biblioteca Nacional, Santiago, Chile

cARTálogo Bicentenario: Artist’s Books in the National Library of Chile

An exhibition that brings together works by national and foreign artists, based on the catalographic cards that were used in the past to search for books.

The National Library of Chile, interested in disseminating the artistic and cultural value of books, and as part of the celebration of its 200th anniversary, invited a group of artists to participate in the cARTálogo bicentenario project, which consisted of creating a work of art based on old catalogue cards, in order to show its bibliographic and heritage collections from a different perspective.

This new form made it possible to unite the library work of yesteryear with the contemporary vision of each of the participating artists, establishing novel dialogues between container and content, resulting in a diversity of works as the result of the reinterpretation and intervention of these historical pieces.

“We got to know the University of Iowa’s “Cartalog” project through artist Carolina Larrea, who was studying at the Iowa Center for the Book. Then, we wanted to do the same at the National Library of Chile, especially for its bicentennial, since the cards were forgotten and constitute an important part of the bibliographic heritage in themselves,” explains Soledad Abarca, head of the library’s Archive of Oral Literature and Popular Traditions. “The new readings that artists’ books allow us are infinite and encourage the imagination and appreciation of the book in its various forms”.

This exhibition brought together 51 artist’s books, which can be seen by the public between 10 October 2013 and 10 January 2014, in the new temporary exhibition hall (Alameda Hall, first floor) of the National Library.

Thanks to the artists’ generous donation of their work, this project will also mark the beginning of the creation of a collection of artists’ books that will become part of the Biblioteca Nacional’s special collections.
