Arte en Chile: 3 miradas (Art in Chile: 3 Perspectives), an exhibition that will be on display from 21 March 2014 on the first floor of the MNBA, is a selection of works from the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes’ Heritage Collection that renews the previous exhibitions of the artistic repertoire housed in the Museum.

Three prominent national curators were invited to participate in this project, who, through their different proposals, present an exhibition structured as follows: The power of the image, by Juan Manuel Martínez; Reading Room: (Re) Presentation of the Book, by Alberto Madrid; and The Bodies of History, by Patricio M. Zárate. Through these different views, the visitor will be able to appreciate “historical” works from the Collection, others that for years remained in the Museum’s deposits and were never even exhibited before, as well as some recently acquired by the institution, such as pieces by contemporary artists like Jorge Brantmayer, Mónica Bengoa, Eduardo Vilches, Alicia Villarreal and Paz Errázuriz, among others.

This exhibition, although it will be on display for a period of a year or two, is conceived as a permanent innovation, in this way guest curators will be able to intervene, criticize or complement the exhibition and curatorial proposal presented here, a project that Ramón Castillo will begin in the second half of 2014.

“The Museum is embarking on a period of renewal of its Heritage Collection, the main objective of which is to strengthen and enhance the value of national art in conjunction with works from other countries, emphasizing the identity and multiculturalism of our nation, promoting a policy of inclusion of new media and artistic expressions. As well as providing content and experiences that allow a better understanding of art as a reflection of both the national and international context,” says Roberto Farriol, director of the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes.

This is how this project also contemplates the holding of talks in the middle of this year in which, together with the curators and guests, the different art issues present in the exhibition will be discussed.

As Farriol himself describes in the first catalogue of the exhibition –an extended edition will be published later this year– “Juan Manuel Martínez, taking the early history of Chile, structures his curatorial work on the basis of the models and functions of the image in relation to power. Hence, the focus of his curatorship is centered on The Power of the Image. Martínez, as a historian, introduces a critical and realistic look at the instrumentalization of the image in the service of power, used as a tool that has allowed the construction of realities and identities in the different periods of Chilean history.

Alberto Madrid, under the title Reading Room: (Re) Presentation of the Book, reflects on the relationship between the image, meaning(s) and materiality(ies) of the book and the act of reading –the written word– from the different modes of representation and presentation of the latter through the artist’s book. In this way, Madrid proposes a curatorship of works from the Collection that overlap at different moments in history, to make us see and read about the inalienable relationship between the image and the word.

Finally, Patricio M. Zárate reformulates art in Chile from the notion of The bodies of history. This image operates as a territorial, political and historical metaphor for Chile. It also supports the very representation of the pain and violence of the bodies. Thus, the presence of these bodies and their oblivion are part of the curatorial axis structured from the denunciation of the omission of subjects and events, as one of the cruelest, most devastating practices and with the greatest consequences in society and culture (…)

Our desire, as a team that works every day at the Museum, is to awaken the capacity for astonishment, providing a significant experience of approaching new perceptions and conceptions of art in Chile”, concludes the director of the MNBA.
